INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE AFCON

Currently the 33rd edition of the African cup of Nations is on going, the binennial international men’s football championship of Africa organised by the confederation of African football (CAF). This year tournament is hosted by Cameroon and will take place from 9th January to 6 February.

Here are some interesting facts about the africa cup of Nations

*The Africa cup of Nations was first held in February 1957 in Khartoum, Sudan and was won by Egypt and also Egypt is the first nation to retain the title in 1959.

*Ghana is the first nation to win the tournament 3 times.

*Samuel eto holds the record for most career goals scored in the nation’s cup (18 goals).

*Egypt goal keeper essam el hadary became the oldest player at 44 years and 21 days to feature in the tournament when he faced Cameron in the 2017 final in Libreville.

*The most successful country has been Egypt with (7) titles followed by Cameroon (5), Ghana (4) , Nigeria (3), and democratic Republic of Congo and the ivory coast (2) each.

*Shiva N’zigou of Gabon is the youngest player to feature and score at the tournament. He was 16 years old and 93 days when he played at AFCON in 2000, scoring in 1-3 defeat against South Africa.

*The coach with most titles are Charles Gyamfi of Ghana (3) and Hassan shehata (3).

*The coach who have won the title with multiple teams is hervé renard ( as manger of Zambia 2012 and ivory coast in 2015).

*The country that has hosted the AFCON the most is Egypt 5 times (1959, 1974, 1986 ,2006 and 2019).

*Egypt (in 1957), Ghana ( in 1963), and south Africa ( in 1996) are the only team to have won the tournament in their debut appearance.

*In 2017, Egypt holds record of 24 consecutive Africa cup of Nations matches played without defeat.

*The AFCON trophy is worth $150,000.

*Dating back to 2010 during this run Egypt also reached a record 9 consecutive wins in AFCON matches after beating Ghana in 2010 final while becoming the first team to win 3 consecutive AFCON titles. Thier unbeaten run came to an end on the 5th of February 2017, after Egypt lost 1-2 to Cameroon in the 2017 final.
